WHAT IS CMDF

It represents a group of people who believe in the same Christian doctrine and work in the same medical profession. Yet far more than that, we share the same love, the same faith, the same hope which lead to the same vision and mission in our service of medicine.

HISTORY

The idea of establishing a local Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship was started in 1975 when a group of doctors and medical students attended the 5th International Congress of Christian Physicians. They were amazed by the strong fellowship and the effective witness of the Singapore medical group. They saw the need of forming a CMDF in Hong Kong. Their vision was shared with many others resulting in the formation of the Interim Executive Committee in May 1976. After 5 months of preparatory work, the 1st Annual General Meeting was held in September when the Fellowship was officially found.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To encourage members towards maturity in Christ by sharing and bearing each other's burden in prayer and fellowship.
  2. To establish a Christian view on the dilemmas and problems that arise in the practice of our profession, and to present these views, as a positive Christian witness, to our medical/dental professional colleagues and the public at large.
  3. To encourage members to take a definite interest and to share in Christian medical mission - both local and overseas.
  4. To encourage members to take active parts, in cooperation with nursing and paramedical Christian groups, in patient and colleague evangelism.

THE FELLOWSHIP FUNCTIONS

To achieve the above objectives, the CMDF have attempted the following works in the past 15 years with the support from fellow Christian medical professionals:

1. Christian Fellowship

This was promoted through family gatherings, regional group sharing, grand meetings, formation of cell groups in hospitals, electronic bulletin boards and luncheon meetings for those in the private practice.

2. Christian Service

One of our main emphasis is medical mission, both local and overseas. For 12 years, at the former Kowloon Bay Temporary Housing Area, we have run a health clinic providing holistic care (evening medical and dental service) to the community. It was also staffed with full-time workers who, with the help from volunteers and local churches, minister to the spiritual and social needs of the community. However the clinic was demolished in 1990 when the whole area was reclaimed by the government for building highways.

Local medical service had also been provided to the Yaumatei Boat people, and the elderly inhabitants of the Tai O village. These works were conducted with the initiation of the local church there.

As regard overseas mission, we had for the past number of years been arranging missionary visits for doctors, dentists, nurses and medical students to mission fields, mainly in the South East Asia. For instances we have visited refugee villages in Thailand a number of times.

These projects were conducted in conjunction with the Nurses Christian Fellowship.

3. Christian medical education

The Fellowship has published papers on current issues of medical interest, e.g. Homosexuality, Pornography, Medical Mission, Human Sexuality, etc. For 2 years, a subcommittee was set up which had organised bimonthly lectures on topics of medical ethics. Since the closure of the Kowloon Bay clinic, resources were channelled into the formation of an educational team, to render health education and evangelism.

4. Miscellaneous

  • Special talks and lectures
  • Contact with medical students of the 2 medical schools
  • Promotion of the Hospital Chaplaincy program
  • Medical literature and newsletters
  • Establish link with overseas Christian groups
