The Hong Kong Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship

CMDF
Christian Medical & Dental Fellowship of Hong Kong
Chairman Annual Report 1999/2000

Bearers of the Executive Committee for the year 1999/2000 consisted of the

Chairman: Dr Kam-ming Chow
Vice-Chairman: Dr Amy Chui
Hon Secretary: Dr Warren Cheung
Hon Treasurer: Dr Francis Lee
Committee Members: Dr Paul Ng (Editor of Bulletin)
  Dr Daniel Tsoi
  Dr Wing-hung Sitt (Past Chairman)
Co-op Members: Dr Edmund Cheung
  Dr Tong Loy
  Dr Chun-hing Tse (IT Consultant)

We could not recruit a Dental Surgeon into our Executive Committee. There may be a deficit in spreading CMDF news and message to our dental colleagues and students. For the coming year, we hope our members can make some suggestions to our Ex-Co.

This year we have about 56 members. There is an increase of members joining the fellowship. It is due to the introduction of Medical Benefit Scheme for Christian Pastoral Staff. All joining doctors must be a member of CMDF.

Regular Meetings

After extensive discussion in the Ex-Co meetings, there is problem in recruiting speakers for our regular meeting and attracting members to attend our meeting. Our decision is to host two meetings a year, AOM in November/December and Summer meeting in June/July. In the coming year, we want to host seminar with special topics rather than regular meetings. We are preparing to arrange two half-days 'Marriage Counseling' seminar for doctors.

Date Speaker Topic
November 1999 Rev Kit-choi Law
June 2000 Dr Nim-chung Chan Cross-Cultural Medical Mission
October 2000 (joint meeting with NCF) Rev Po-wah Lai Handling of Spiritual Crisis of Patients

The Office following.

Special Meetings

A lecture 'Should Doctors Play God?' was delivered by Prof AG Johnson on 2 May 2000.

Prof Johnson is a member of Ex-Co of International Christian Medical Dental Association (ICMDA). During his stay in Hong Kong, he made contact with us and lay down further connection between CMDF(Hong Kong) and ICMDA, especially about the next World Congress in Taipei 2002.

Financial Matters

This year we can still keep a healthy financial report which will be presented by our Financial Secretary afterward.

  • Students' Travel Grant - this year we only receive one enquiry and no application despite our effort in spreading the news of this grant to both University Students. We will keep this for next year and also for travel grant to World Congress, ICMDA 2002.
  • Donation to Association of Hong Kong Joint Hospital Chaplaincy Ministry Ltd (AJHCM) - donation has been made to AJHCM for their administrative expenses in the Medical Benefit Scheme for Christian Pastoral Staff (MB SCPS). The amount will not be less than the sum of money we received from this scheme.

Joint Project with NCF & AJHCM

  • MBSCPS - we joined with AJHCM, roll out a trial programme for our Pastors. A thorough report will be delivered by Dr WH Sitt later.
  • Evangelical Drama - we joined with NCF & AJHCM, will host an evangelical drama in August 2001. We have invited 'Agape Communication' (????) to organize this drama. Agape Communication has already hosted a drama called 'The Everlasting Love' concerning life of medical and nursing staffs. We will like to take this drama as an evangelical tools to spread Gospel to our colleagues and friends. Preparation work on refining the script is in progress. Dr WH Sin and Dr Amy Chui will follow up this large project. Our member Dr Yee-shing Chan will give expert advice to us.
  • Because of our close partnership in various activities, we have joint prayer meetings with NCF and AJHCM in 2nd Friday of every even month at Headquarter of AJHCM.

International Connection

After the visit of Prof AG Johnson, we have started more connection with ICDMA. I have represented our Fellowship in attending Regional Conference of ICDMA in Singapore in July 2000. 1 have met members from various CMDF of Southeast Asian countries, and Ex-Co of LCDMA.

We have been invited to suggest speakers from Hong Kong Medical Christian field to attend the World Congress at Taipei in 2002. We are invited to help in inviting Christian doctors from China to attend this Congress. We know it is difficult. We will pray God in opening gates for Chinese Christian doctors to contact outside world.

We will like to set up grant to aid invited speakers and student to attend the World Congress.

IT Matters

Our Ex-Co decided to use e-mail or web to distribute our bulletin, news, prayer news and new activities. This will cut down our expenditure in sending mail.

Due to shortage of manpower, we have problems in updating information of our Web page. We would like to expand and upkeep our electronic contact between members in the coming years. Extra support from FES may be sought in form of the clerical support. If any members interest in setting up our Web, please contact any members of Ex-Co.

Student Connection

For future benefit of CMDF, we agree that student work is very important. Two of our Ex-Co members, Dr Amy Chui and Dr Daniel Tsoi, are appointed as Students Coordinators. However we still have conimunication problems with them. In my prayer, I have asked God to provide a full time support to medical students fellowship activities. It can be supported from FES or we can provide a full time staff who know students a lot. This person is called by Rev KC Law as "Doctors' Pastor".

After a year of work, we feel that CMDF cannot achieve its full potential to caring and co-ordinating medical students, our members, other Christian doctors and medical missionaries.

It is because we haven't got a full time staff or member in planning, co-ordinating and executive function. Certainly the financial burden of this staff is heavy. If we want to expand God's Kingdom in Christian field of Hong Kong, China and far beyond, we need this Person to be with us.

Let us pray for God's Kingdom to be with us, Hong Kong's and China's Christian doctors, our overseas medical missionaries and Organizations working for missionary works.

Amen!
